Block Party
Block Party is a six-plex on a 40’ wide corner lot in Vancouver. The building is a collection of uniquely designed houses that cater to idiosyncratic owners. Stacked on top of each other like children’s building blocks, these are individual houses that have embraced a communal lifestyle. The gaps between the blocks become shared social areas.
The six houses vary widely in their spatial arrangements: one house is a chain of rooms and courtyards connected by corridors, while another is a three-story split-level building where each level is a room. The spaces are dramatic, generous, and playfully unpredictable. Collectively, the houses explore various forms of architectural typologies, questioning what may have been lost through the efficency of the market.
